Cataracts
and Vision
Loss in Dogs

Cataracts are a common eye condition in dogs and one of the leading causes of vision loss, especially as pets age. A cataract occurs when the normally clear lens of the eye becomes cloudy, preventing light from reaching the retina properly. This cloudiness can range from mild to severe and may affect one or both eyes, gradually impacting a dog’s ability to see clearly.

Several factors can contribute to cataracts in dogs, including genetics, aging, diabetes, eye injuries, and underlying health conditions. Diabetic cataracts, in particular, can develop rapidly and lead to sudden vision loss if not treated promptly. Early signs often include a bluish or white appearance in the eye, bumping into objects, hesitation in low-light environments, or changes in behavior such as increased anxiety.

Vision loss caused by cataracts can significantly affect a dog’s quality of life, but early diagnosis makes a major difference. A veterinarian or veterinary ophthalmologist can evaluate the severity of the cataract and determine the best course of action. In many cases, surgery is a highly effective option and can restore much or all of a dog’s vision. When surgery is not possible, supportive care and environmental adjustments can help dogs adapt and remain comfortable.

Regular veterinary checkups are essential for detecting cataracts and other eye conditions early. Monitoring your dog’s vision and eye appearance, especially in senior dogs or breeds prone to cataracts, can help ensure timely treatment and preserve vision for as long as possible.
