Senior Pets
and the Holidays

The holidays are a special time filled with gatherings, decorations, and changes to our daily routines—but for senior pets, these seasonal shifts can be overwhelming. Older pets often rely on consistency, comfort, and familiar surroundings to feel secure, so a little extra care can make the holidays enjoyable for them too.

One of the most important things to keep in mind is maintaining your senior pet’s routine. Regular feeding times, gentle exercise, medication schedules, and quiet rest periods help reduce stress. While guests and celebrations are exciting, make sure your pet has a calm, cozy space where they can retreat if things become too noisy or busy.

Holiday foods also require extra caution. Senior pets may have sensitive stomachs or specific dietary needs, and rich or unfamiliar foods can cause digestive upset or more serious health issues. Keep festive treats out of reach and remind guests not to share table scraps.

Comfort and safety are equally important during this season. Slippery floors, new decorations, cords, and candles can pose risks for pets with limited mobility or reduced vision. Simple adjustments—such as non-slip rugs, clear pathways, and safe decoration placement—can help prevent accidents.

Finally, don’t forget the emotional side of the holidays. Senior pets thrive on gentle attention, affection, and reassurance. Spending quiet, meaningful time together can be just as special as any celebration.

With a little planning and mindfulness, the holidays can be a warm, peaceful, and joyful time for you and your senior pet—creating memories that truly matter.
